The 2005 Ray DeVries Church Music Ministry Award
E. Martene Craig is the 2005 recipient of the Ray DeVries Church Music Ministry Award which was presented at MUSICalifornia March 28, 2005. It was a blessing to have many share in this occasion. This Lifetime Achievement Award was established in Ray DeVries’ memory to recognize the work of those who have had significant impact and influence on the music and worship ministry of the church.Throughout her ministry spanning five decades, four churches and ARISE Academy of the Arts and Performing Arts Theatre which she founded and directed, Martene’s dedication, encouragement and vision have been the inspirational force behind many youth and adults who are now actively involved in churches and outreach ministries.
Ray DeVries, Ralph Carmichael’s right hand man at Lexicon Music, was Martene’s dear friend who collaborated with her in many ground-breaking ministries. One highlight of their joint efforts found her directing 1000 children representing Southland Christian Schools in a musical at the Anaheim Convention Center with 10,000 people in attendance.
Martene has been a popular clinician at MUSICalifornia each year and her choral and instrumental groups have presented numerous premieres of musicals there since it began over 30 years ago. The very first year she led workshops on children, youth, and adult choirs and presented the premiere of Ralph's youth musical, "I'm Here, God's Here, Now We Can Start." Last year, as well as teaching, she presented the premiere of the children’s musical, “Captain Noah and the One and Only Zoo Cruise for Twos.”
